Acupuncture and Sleep: What the Evidence Says

finding your rest: how acupuncture can help you sleep better

When sleep is difficult, it is worth understanding what is keeping you awake before choosing a treatment. Acupuncture is one option people ask about, but its role in insomnia care needs to be described carefully.

What does the evidence say?

Some studies suggest that acupuncture may improve insomnia symptoms. However, NCCIH's review of complementary approaches for sleep notes that many studies are small, use different methods and have limitations in quality. These findings do not establish that acupuncture reliably treats insomnia for everyone.

Start with an assessment of your sleep

For persistent insomnia, speak with a qualified healthcare provider about assessment and treatment. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute identifies cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as the usual first treatment for long-term insomnia. Acupuncture should not delay that assessment or replace an agreed treatment plan.

Where might acupuncture fit?

If pain is part of what you want help with, discuss it with your practitioner. NCCIH reports evidence of benefit for some pain conditions, while noting that acupuncture's mechanisms are not fully understood. Evidence for pain relief does not, by itself, demonstrate an effective treatment for a sleep disorder.

Acupuncture is not risk-free. NCCIH notes that improper treatment or nonsterile needles can cause complications, including serious injury or infection. Ask about your practitioner's qualifications, the risks, alternatives and what progress would look like for you.
